What is a Domain Name?
Domain names are the names or web / internet addresses that identify web sites. For example, Rucca.net is a domain name. Domain refers to the server or "domain" where the web site is hosted.
Allowed Characters
Domain names allow alphabetic and numeric characters only. Accented characters and symbols are not permitted. The only non-alphanumeric character allowed is a dash or multiple dashes. For example, www.my-domain.com or www.my--domain.com.
Top Level Domains
The most commonly known top level domains are: .com, .net and .org. In addition to these, there are domains for practically every country such as: .za, .us, .pt and .tv There are also domains for various other organization such as colleges (.edu), the military (.mil) and government agencies to name a few. Second and Third Level Domains
Second level domains refers to what is left of the dot. For example, the second level domain in www.Rucca.net is Rucca. Third level domains take this idea a step further. The third level of www.Rucca.net is www. Third level domains can also be used as sub domains. For example, blog.rucca.net or email.rucca.net.
Unconventional Domains
Unconventional domains use the top level domain to create a word or brand because many .com domains are taken. For example, www.mydoma.in/. This unconventional domain uses the top level domain name for India.
Premium Domains
Premium domains are domains that use well known words or are particularly short; usually five letters or less. Premium domains also include ones that are prefaced by an "I" or "E" which indicates the brand is online. Some premium domains include: iPowerWeb and iDate.co.za. Premium domains are most often .com, but can be on other top level domains like .net, .info and .biz and growing in popularity even two level domains and in particular country domains like .za, .uk, .de and .cn |
